Background of the Study
Antibiotic resistance (ABR) is an increasingly serious global health threat, particularly in low-resource settings where misuse and overuse of antibiotics are common. Yobe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, faces significant challenges related to antibiotic resistance, particularly in the treatment of common bacterial infections such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, and urinary tract infections. The misuse of antibiotics in both healthcare settings and agricultural practices has contributed to the development of resistant strains of bacteria. This study aims to examine the effects of antibiotic resistance on the treatment of bacterial infections in Yobe State and explore the contributing factors, as well as the impact on public health.
Statement of the Problem
The growing prevalence of antibiotic resistance in Yobe State is threatening the effectiveness of standard treatments for bacterial infections. Inappropriate use of antibiotics, limited access to proper diagnostic tools, and a lack of awareness about the dangers of resistance contribute to this public health challenge. This situation is exacerbated by the state’s limited healthcare infrastructure and high levels of self-medication among the population. The study seeks to understand the extent of antibiotic resistance in Yobe State and its implications for the treatment and management of bacterial infections.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in bacterial infections in Yobe State.
2. To identify the factors contributing to antibiotic resistance in Yobe State.
3. To recommend strategies for mitigating the impact of antibiotic resistance on public health in Yobe State.

Research Hypotheses

3. Public health interventions, such as education on appropriate antibiotic use and improved diagnostics, will reduce the impact of antibiotic resistance in Yobe State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in common bacterial infections in Yobe State, specifically within healthcare settings. It will examine factors such as antibiotic misuse, healthcare access, and public awareness. Limitations include the availability of comprehensive and up-to-date data on antibiotic resistance patterns and potential challenges in obtaining bacterial culture results from remote areas.
